Assumption Day 2026 in Bologna is the perfect opportunity to experience the city and its surroundings at a different pace, combining culture, nature and relaxation. From the historic city centre to the hills, 15 August offers plenty of ways to spend the day, discover new places or simply enjoy a few hours of rest.
Even on 15 August, Bologna continues to offer plenty of culture. You can choose from Palazzo Pepoli – Museum of the History of Bologna, MAMbo, the Civic Archaeological Museum and the International Music Museum and Library, or visit the Museum of Industrial Heritage, Casa Morandi, the Medieval Civic Museum and the Municipal Art Collections. There are also plenty of temporary exhibitions to discover.
At Palazzo Pepoli, you can visit Frida Kahlo. The Gaze as Identity, an exhibition exploring the construction of the Mexican artist’s image and myth through photographs taken by some of the leading photographers of the 20th century. At MAST, Bernd & Hilla Becher. History of a Method retraces the work of the renowned German photographers, while MAMbo hosts two exhibitions: Luigi Ghirri and Gianni Celati. Verso la foce, which explores the creative partnership between the photographer and the writer through images of the Po Valley landscape, and Giuseppe Chiari 1926–2026, celebrating the centenary of the artist’s birth. Music enthusiasts, meanwhile, can visit Queen The Last Tour at the Music Museum, an exhibition featuring Torleif Svensson’s photographs of Queen’s final tour.
15 August can also be a great opportunity to discover—or rediscover—Bologna. With the Discover Bologna walking tour, you can stroll through the heart of the historic city centre accompanied by a guide, taking in Piazza Maggiore, San Petronio, Santo Stefano and some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
You can also delve into the history of the world’s oldest university with a visit to the Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio and Anatomical Theatre, or climb the Clock Tower at Palazzo d’Accursio to enjoy a splendid panoramic view over Bologna’s rooftops.
For a closer look at the historic seat of the city government, choose Palazzo d’Accursio: Art and History of Bologna Town Hall, a guided tour through monumental halls, works of art and centuries of the city’s history.

For those who would rather slow down and seek some relief from the heat on 15 August, there is no need to travel far from the city centre.
In Bologna and across the metropolitan area, you will find several outdoor swimming pools where you can spend a few hours enjoying a swim and an ice cream. Alternatively, pack a picnic basket and choose one of the perfect places for picnics and barbecues, among city parks, meadows and the lower Bolognese hills. And should you wish to turn 15 August into a proper day trip, set off to discover the most picturesque towns to photograph, with their charming historic centres and Apennine landscapes.
