The Museum of Industrial Heritage is located on the northern outskirts of Bologna, in a structure that was once a brickworks on the banks of the Navile, a navigable channel that once ran through the city.
The brickworks was built in 1887 with its non-stop cycle Hoffmann kiln. It produced bricks, Marseille roof tiles and fired bricks using the top-quality clay present locally. At the end of the century, Galotti expanded enough to need another Hoffmann kiln. Some traces of this second kiln are still visible in the courtyard. The factory was abandoned after closing in 1966. The City of Bologna later purchased it and renovated it between 1984 and 1990. The brickworks was completely converted to host the museum, other activities and institutions.

Accessibility
Motor disability and difficulty of movement
Practically all the rooms and grounds of the museum are accessible to people with disabilities and mobility limitations. The entrance has a manual revolving door that could create some difficulties, but there is an intercom to request assistance and the possibility to enter through a side entrance. Restrooms for disabled persons on the first and second floors are accessible by lift, but do not have a sprayer.
Hearing disability
Autonomous visits by people with hearing disabilities are facilitated by introductory panels, videos and touchscreens. However, the lack of signage or orientation within the exhibit (map of the museum, floor plans) and the absence of subtitles or guide videos with sign language can make autonomous use of content difficult. There are no means of visual communication in case of alarm in the restrooms or in the lift.
Visual disability
The museum is 250 m from the bus stop, but it is possible to arrange the presence of a guide at the bus stop who will accompany disabled visitors to the entrance along a route that is quite difficult. The exhibition can be explored tactilely by reservation with a guide from the museum's educational service. Operators show great commitment to compensate for the lack of specific training in working with the visually impaired. Captions and room communications are difficult to read for those who are visually impaired. There is no text in Braille or large print.
