Discover Bologna

View of San Luca, Bologna

Capital of Emilia Romagna, one of the 50 richest and most developed regions in the European Union, Bologna is a city with a great historical tradition but with an eye to the future.

Home to Europe's oldest university, Bologna is rich in art and culture. The medieval center, with its towers and 40 kilometers of porticoes named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best preserved in the world, and more than 50 museums guard its great heritage.

Activities to do in the city?

There is so much to do in Bologna: going up the towers, visiting historic buildings and walking under the porticoes are a must. Plus music, theater, cinema, exhibitions--the wide variety of cultural offerings in the area makes it a real surprise.

What about outside the city?

We also strongly recommend walking in the green itineraries in Bologna and its province: you will discover an incredible and unexpected natural landscape just a few kilometers from the city center.

Bologna and the Motor Valley

Bologna is also known worldwide for being the cradle of Motor Valley, an industrial district located in Emilia-Romagna, where some of the world's most important automobile and motorcycle industries, such as Ferrari, Maserati, Pagani, Lamborghini, Ducati, Dallara and Tazzari, were born and are still based.

In Bologna to... eat

One of the city's strengths, which sets it apart nationally and internationally, is its cuisine. The Emilian, and more specifically Bolognese, cuisine has now become recognizable throughout the world and is a guarantee of quality.

How to get to the city

Bologna, a major road junction since Roman times, is now the center of a transportation network of fundamental importance in Europe and Italy.

  • Just a 7-minute train ride from the city center, Guglielmo Marconi International Airport connects Bologna to major Italian and European airports. It is one of the largest airports in Italy in terms of the number of international destinations served, with advanced technological equipment for safety and environmental protection. Visit the airport's website to find out about all flights arriving and departing from Bologna. Here for more info about the Marconi Express, the train that connects the airport to the city in just 7 minutes.

  • Because of its particularly strategic geographic location, Bologna is Italy's main railway hub; a high-speed line connects it to Florence (37 min.), Milan (65 min.), Venice (90 min.) and Rome (2 hr. 22 min.). Bologna's central station is less than a kilometer from the city's main tourist attractions. Trains arrive at the central station from all over Italy and beyond, with a busy daily transit of trains and passengers. Visit Trenitalia and Italo, the two rail transportation companies, to see all the trains.

  • The major highways connecting Europe with southern Italy all meet in Bologna: the Autostrada del Sole (A1) Milan-Naples; the A13 to Ferrara, Padua, Venice and Trieste; and the A14 to the Adriatic coast (Rimini, Ravenna, Ancona, Bari).  If you arrive by car, you may find it useful to consult the national highways website. From the highway exit, the city center is only 2 km away. You can also arrive by bus to Bologna. Buses from all major Italian and European cities arrive in the city. The Bologna Bus Station, the destination of all tourist buses, is located just outside the historic city center.
