Your experience in brief
10.30 a.m. — Meet the guide at the Info Point in Piazza Maggiore and depart for the Archiginnasio, where you will visit the Cappella dei Bulgari.
The chapel was built between 1563 and 1565 as an academic-religious university environment, known as the ‘cappella dello Studio’. Between 1591 and 1594, Bartolomeo Cesi created a cycle of frescoes depicting the ‘Stories of the Life of the Virgin’.
During the bombing of 29 January 1944, the east side of the palace suffered severe damage, causing the almost total loss of Cesi's frescoes. Today, thanks to a careful digital reconstruction in a virtual environment, based on photographs taken in the 1920s, it is possible to admire the cycle of frescoes in its entirety.
At the end of the visit, transfer on foot to the Municipal Art Collections.
The presence of works by Cesi in the museum's collection allows us to appreciate his central role in the history of Bolognese art, thanks in part to the comparison with the works of other artists of his generation. The fresco “The Three Children in the Furnace of Babylon” (c. 1582–1583), detached from the Monastery of San Girolamo della Certosa, stands out for the originality of its theme and composition.
The tour will then continue to the Medieval Civic Museum, where the Lapidary rooms are hosting the exhibition “Bartolomeo Cesi (1556-1629). Painting of silence in the age of the Carracci”, the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist.
