General description
A special visit to two cornerstone sites of the city of Carpi:
Palazzo dei Pio is one of the most important Renaissance monumental complexes in Emilia-Romagna, offering a fascinating insight into the history and culture of Carpi.
The visit includes areas that are not usually accessible, such as the “Guerriero” and the ascent to the Torre del Passerino.
The Church of San Nicolò, reopened in 2024 after a careful restoration following the 2012 earthquake, is one of the city’s most significant religious buildings. In its current form, the church was built between 1493 and 1520 at the request of Alberto III Pio. Originally designed with a central plan, it was later modified with the addition of the aisles, attributed to a design by Baldassarre Peruzzi.
The interior decoration, featuring painted coffers and candelabra motifs, dates back to the 19th century and echoes the refined original decoration of the early 16th century. Of particular interest are two panels by Bernardino Loschi and the scagliola altar frontals.
