The Soul Museum is located in the centre of Porretta Terme, set up in the former 19th-century prisons, and collects evidence of the passage of soul music greats such as Rufus Thomas and Solomon Burke through the city, whose stage clothes, shoes and other personal items are preserved. His photographic and audiovisual collection is also extensive. The exhibition is curated by Riccardo Negrelli.
Since 1988, in fact, the Porretta Soul Festival, Tribute To Otis Redding, has become the most prestigious European event dedicated entirely to soul and rhythm & blues music, with particular reference to the Memphis Sound, the musical school of the great Otis Redding. During the event, free concerts are held in the village and 15 murals dedicated to the soul legends can be admired.
