Description
A series of free guided tours on the occasion of the Bologna Portici Festival. Set out to discover the UNESCO porticos starting at the Museum of the History of Bologna, with its section dedicated to the porticos, and continuing around the city in search of the most beautiful and special features!
Programme:
Wednesday 04 June, 4:00 pm: The arcades of the working-class villages
Along with the porticoes of the noble palaces, porticoes also developed in poor villages, with different sizes and uses due to the scarcity of space and... money! At Porta San Mamolo we find the so-called ‘Mirasoli’ the glimpses and corners where there was a flourishing of artisan workshops and the most miserable activities, from porters to prostitutes, the ‘red light’ district for centuries. We proceed towards Via Saragozza, skirting the Collegio di Spagna, and walk along Via del Fossato, Via Senzanome (the narrowest portico), Via Ca' Selvatica and Via Santa Caterina.
Thursday 05 June, 4:00 pm: The 19th-century porticoes of the Belle Époque
Bologna's noble promenade from the Pavaglione to the Giardini Margherita during the Belle Époque: Portico dell'Archiginnasio (the Pavaglione for the Bolognese), Via Farini, Piazza Cavour and Piazza Minghetti: executive, financial and commercial buildings echoing the new social and political life (Banca Nazionale, Cassa di Risparmio) where famous ‘international’ architects worked. We continue along the 19th-century part of Via Santo Stefano, passing by the majestic Renaissance portico of the Baraccano to the Giardini Margherita.
Friday 06 June, 4:00 pm: The Porticoes of the Nobles from the Middle Ages to the Baroque
A visit to the Porticoes of Via Marsala with Palazzo Grassi and its 13th-century portico, Strada San Donato (today Via Zamboni) on the trail of the Bentivoglio, Lords of Bologna and all the other noble families - friends and enemies - who built their palaces there from the 15th to the 17th century. A stroll leads to Strada Maggiore, a true concentration of architecture from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Crossing the high portico of Palazzo Isolani you enter the other noble artery of Bologna with the spectacle of every style and time, Via Santo Stefano.
Saturday 07 and Sunday 08 June, 11:00 am: Classic tour of the UNESCO arcades (ITA + ENG)
The tour begins with a visit to the Museum of the History of Bologna, in particular the section dedicated to the porticos of Bologna. It continues outside with a walk through the historical centre in the company of an expert guide to discover their history, from wooden porticoes to more modern ones. Straight, round, wooden or concrete, porticos have always designed the welcoming geometry of Bologna's city centre.
