Heatwaves in Bologna: useful tips

Updated on 01 July 2026

During periods of intense heat, it is advisable to take some simple precautions to reduce the risks associated with high temperatures, especially for the elderly, children, vulnerable people, and those suffering from chronic conditions.

How to protect yourself from the heat

The USL Authority of Bologna recommends to:

  • drink water frequently, even in the absence of thirst (unless otherwise indicated by your doctor);
  • avoid alcoholic, sugary, carbonated, or caffeinated drinks;
  • take lukewarm showers or baths;
  • use air conditioners, keeping the temperature difference with the outdoors at no more than 6-7 °C;
  • use fans without directing them directly at the body;
  • avoid going out and doing physical activity during the hottest hours of the day;
  • wear light, breathable clothing and protect yourself from the sun;
  • pay particular attention to elderly people who live alone or are not self-sufficient.

Drinking water

To maintain proper hydration, you can use the drinking fountains and public water dispensers available across the city. The Municipality of Bologna is expanding the supply point network.

Check the updated map of drinking fountains and water dispensers on the Municipality of Bologna website.

Where to find relief from the heat

During the hottest hours, it is advisable to stay in air-conditioned or shaded places.
