It is one of the villages in Italy with the richest territory of chestnut groves, and here the chestnut is the fruit par excellence, typical and characteristic, so famous that it is also the star of the Museum of Chestnut Civilisation, inside Palazzo Alidosi.
Since the Middle Ages, these delicacies have been the staple food of the local mountain population. Around the year 1000, in the Apennines, chestnut groves replaced oak forests and chestnut trees became such a fundamental resource that they were called “bread trees”. Today, the growers of these magnificent expanses have formed a consortium and obtained European Protected Geographical Indication status. The PGI guarantees the quality and authenticity of Castel del Rio chestnuts.
In addition to being very picturesque and offering a slow tourism experience, the village is also famous for the Ponte Alidosi, a splendid example of a Renaissance humpback bridge.
