Tolè is the largest village in the municipality of Vergato. The town name is a dialectal shortening of Toleto or Toledo (as it was called until a few centuries ago), which originates from the Latin 'Tabula' from which, through progressive modifications, 'Tabuletum', 'Tauletum', 'Toletum'; a term meaning 'planking', a place where timber was sawn into planks, boards, or, less probably, plain, with reference to the flat area of the Pradole.
The heights above the town and in particular the hilltop of Mount Croce offer a sweeping perspective stretching as far as Mount Vigese and Montovolo to the south, Corno alle Scale and Cimone to the south-west, the hill of Montetortore to the west and, on a clear day, the Po Valley as far as the Veronese Pre-Alps. The village centre is crossed by the small Cassia road, whilst the street facing the church is marked by the presence of an old boundary stone that once divided the Papal State from the Duchy of Modena. An icon of the Assumption by Agostino Carracci can also be admired in the town's church.
Within the parish, visitors will find the cemetery chapel (which served as the parish church until 1951) and the alpine chapel of the Madonna della Neve on Mount della Croce, built by the Pro Loco of Tolè alongside the alpine division of Vergato.
Located on the border between Bologna and Modena, Tolè is a village known widely for the cultivation of its famous potato, celebrated in September by the homonymous festival organised by the ProLoco. Another special feature of the territory are the many water springs connected by a path enriched by paintings and sculptures.
Those who have the opportunity to visit the village can admire more than a hundred artworks throughout the narrow historic alleys, including sculptures, paintings and murals by local or visiting artists, displayed in the form of wall pictures, making Tolè a veritable permanent open-air art collection that spans the present and the past, with the most varied themes and painting techniques. Every year, in mid-August, new works are presented and inaugurated on the occasion of Artolè, an event organised by the Fontechiara association. Additionally, in 2020, the Gothic Line exhibition was inaugurated, with objects and collectors' items from the Second World War.
