Cry to music
In Italian the word "cry" rhymes with "song". Even if it is not possible to cry and sing in the same instant, the symbolic language of art allows it as a metaphor, as demonstrated by some of the most moving madrigals written between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The title of this program entirely dedicated to Claudio Monteverdi takes its cue from the famous madrigal cycle included in the Sixth Book (1614): the sixth Lagrime d’amante at the sepulcher of the beloved. The madrigal is certainly the most representative musical genre of the sixteenth century. Evidence of this is the impressive amount of compositions that have come down to us, the work not only of Italian masters but also of musicians from all over Europe. Such is the size of this repertoire that it far exceeds the production of secular music of all other European languages put together.
