Cycling track of San Giovanni in Monte Sabbiuno

Updated on 05 March 2020 From Comune di Bologna

Starting from the city centre, this cycle track will take you up on the hills, on a wonderful path, where history and nature intertwine harmoniously. After visiting the Complex of San Giovanni in Monte and passing through PortaCastiglione you will get outside the city walls.

Continuing towards the hills, you will arrive at Centro Putti, located between the Seminary premises and next to the Rizzoli hospital. Do not miss the astonishing view over the city’s eastern side. Villa Guastavillani, of particular artistic interest, was built during the 16th century and is nowadays used for hosting advanced entrepreneurship courses organized by the University of Bologna. Proceeding through the hills you will finally reach the gullies of Paderno and Sabbiuno. The town of Sabbiuno is infamously known for the unfortunate events related to clashes between the Nazi and the partisans, whose sacrifice is commemorated today by the Sabbiuno War Memorial, which is also the end point of this itinerary.
