Cycling track along the Reno canal

Updated on 05 March 2020 From Comune di Bologna

This 5.5 km track runs along the west radial cycle path that connects Bologna to Via della Grada and to the centre of Casalecchio di Reno, a small city just outside Bologna. Along the track you can discover the important history of the Bolognese territory related to the waterways, which at the end of the 13th century paved the way for the development of a flourishing industry that led Bologna to becoming the largest textile centre in Italy. According to the earliest sources mentioning the Reno canal in 1191, a handful of citizens, called Ramisani, built a kind of wooden palisade across the river. Within the fence they dug a  canal up to Bologna to allow the operation of the mills, which supplied certain factories of the city with water and mechanical energy and which fuelled the waters of the Navile waterway.

The track will allow you to enjoy the extraordinary views along the Reno canal and to admire the ancient ruins of the city’s gates and waterworks. Departing from the Certosa di Bologna, one of the oldest monumental cemeteries in Europe, the itinerary initially proceeds towards the Giardino del Ghisello, which would power the spinning machine for the production of silk, and then moves to the hemp factory, called Ex Filanda, finally passing by the Casa del Ghiaccio (Ice House). The last stages of the itinerary are the Chiusa of Casalecchio di Reno and the verdant Parco della Chiusa (Lock Park), otherwise known as Talon Park, where you can relax and re-energize surrounded by a peaceful nature.
