The Palazzo del Podestà, in Piazza Maggiore, was the first site of the city government exercised by the mayor, his judges and officials. The Torre dell’Arengo was immediately erected alongside, a bell tower used to muster the citizens in the case of extraordinary events.
Of great interest is the Voltone del Podestà with its unique acoustic effect that permits visitors to speak to each other from the opposite corners of the archway.
