The Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi is located in the foothills southeast of Bologna and crossed by a number of streams, the Savena, Zena, Idice and Quaderna. It includes over 130 caves, and the characteristic “calanchi” (badlands) of Passo dell’Abbadessa. It is therefore a park characterized by geological formations, which determine a wide variety of landscapes, environments and microclimates. This environmental wealth is reflected in a great biodiversity in terms of the numerous plants and animals, which have adapted to the various habitats; just to give an example, there are at least 17 different species of bats.
