Built starting in the mid-16th century and reshaped through the centuries with numerous structural and decorative changes, Palazzo Bentivoglio is one of the most important examples of civic architecture in historic Bologna.
Today, several wings of the palazzo house a growing private collection that ranges from ancient Emilian painting to international contemporary art. Although not open to the public, the collection forms the heart of a philanthropic project that organizes exhibitions, talks, and public events, often held in the palace's interiors and garden.
Since January 2019, the large exhibition spaces created in the 16th-century cellars have regularly hosted shows exploring artists, works, and themes related to the permanent collection and the site's long history.
At number 3 on the same street, garageBENTIVOGLIO is a street-facing space that showcases a different artwork each month, reinforcing the project's public mission.
On the main floor, the bEB – Biblioteca di Palazzo Bentivoglio holds a library of six thousand art history volumes, catalogued in the Bologna Library System OPAC and accessible by appointment. The collection is housed in four rooms featuring site-specific contemporary interventions, where book presentations and conversations with artists are regularly held.
