As of 1 July 2024 Palazzo Pepoli Campogrande is closed to the public for renovation and function-related upgrading. It is scheduled to reopen in spring of 2026.
The Zambeccari Picture Gallery is housed in Palazzo Pepoli Nuovo or Campogrande, the most prestigious senatorial residence in Bologna.
The palace was built in the 17th century opposite the medieval Palazzo Pepoli Vecchio.
The entire decorative scheme of Palazzo Pepoli Nuovo was created by the protagonists of the great Bolognese decoration of the second half of the 17th century, including Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Donato Creti.
The picture gallery, displayed in the rooms on the piano nobile, is the only aristocratic collection from the 17th and 18th centuries that has survived intact to the present day.
It is the ancient collection of paintings that the Zambeccari, an important Bolognese senatorial family, had collected in their palace during the 18th century. Becoming part of the heritage of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna in 1884, the picture gallery includes fundamental works by the masters of Emilian painting, such as Ludovico Carracci, Guercino, Francesco Albani, Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Donato Creti.
