Bologna
Celebrations in honour of the Blessed Virgin of San Luca. The icon of the Madonna descends in procession from the Sanctuary of San Luca to the city centre. The holy image stays in the Cathedral of San Pietro for one week, and then another procession carries it back to the Sanctuary on Colle della Guardia hill. Yearly the icon of the Madonna di San Luca descends downtown remembering the procession organized in 1433 when - in order to stop the incessant rainfall which was threatening the harvest, Bologna Elders Council decided to ask the Blessed Virgin for a grace. This prayer was satisfied: the rain ceased and the event was celebrated as a miracle by local people. This year the Blessed Virgin of San Luca is arriving in Bologna at Porta Saragozza on Saturday, May 5th. The procession to the Cathedral of San Pietro starts at 6pm, along the streets Saragozza, Collegio di Spagna, Carbonesi, D’Azeglio, Piazza Maggiore, Piazza Nettuno, Indipendenza. Arrival at the Cathedral approx. at 7pm. The icon of San Luca Virgin remains in the Cathedral until Sunday, May 13th 2018 when at 5pm another procession will bring it back to the Sanctuary atop the Colle della Guardia hill, stopping in Piazza Malpighi, Porta Saragozza, and at Meloncello for the benediction. During the week of celebrations the Cathedral of San Pietro is open daily from 6.30am to 10.30pm Further information and updates www.bologna.chiesacattolica.it
