Between charismatic leaders and musical gurus, the 2019 edition of the Bologna Jazz Festival, which will take place between October and November, it will be a garden of delights, for the general public and for the most demanding listeners.
The BJF 2019 will be multi-localized: in addition to the Bolognese theatres, which will host the main concerts (EuropAuditorium Theatre, Duse Theatre, Unipol Auditorium), the festival will be staged in many other city locations (including the now historical clubs: Cantina Bentivoglio and Bravo Caffè) also expanding in the outskirts of the city and in the provinces of Modena and Ferrara.
This year we will listen to the most interesting modern developments of the trio format, starting with the concert by the pianist Fred Hersch, who will open the major events in the theatre (25th October, Unipol Auditorium).
While, focusing on instrumental music, the BJF will host Dianne Reeves (31st October at Duse Theatre), thus measuring itself against the great interpretative history of vocal jazz.
On the8th November at Unipol Auditorium there will be the Cross Currents Trio, a formation in which three legends with their respective instruments will meet: Dave Holland, one of the most important bass players in the history of jazz, Zakir Hussain, the Indian virtuoso of the tabla, who, more than any other, has been influenced by American jazz, and Chris Potter, one of the most popular ‘stylists’ of the sax. With them music flows uncontrollably and without aesthetic boundaries.
On 15th November, the Unipol Auditorium will host a living icon of Brazilian music: Hermeto Pascoal and his 'Grupo'.
Finally, a musical icon like the guitarist Pat Metheny will return (after his 2011 appearance) with a trio that promises to move freely within the repertoire of the charismatic guitarist.
The Bologna Jazz Festival is organised by the Bologna Music Association (Associazione Bologna in Musica) with the help of Regione Emilia-Romagna, Comune di Bologna, Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, Fondazione Carisbo, Gruppo Unipol, TPER, Città Metropolitana di Bologna, Bologna UNESCO Creative City of Music and of the main partner Gruppo Hera.
