In Italy, never before has the string quartet been so alive as in this first part of the millennium. Despite crises, obstacles and impediments, there are dozens of stable ensembles in activity, all of great instrumental and stylistic competence. A persuasive example of this is the Quartetto Eos, born six years ago at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia and already in great evidence for the vastness of its repertoire and the brilliance and depth of its sound. Their programme covers three centuries of history, from Haydn to Stravinsky and Brahms.
