For the first time in Italy, at the Archaeological Museum of Bologna from November 20, 2025 to April 6, 2026, a major exhibition is visually chronicling the fundamental stages of Japanese graphic design, journeying from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the present day. This cultural event, presented by MondoMostre in collaboration with the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna, offers a new look at Japanese graphic creativity.
The exhibition, titled "Graphic Japan", is curated by Rossella Menegazzo and Eleonora Lanza. It serves as a symbolic continuation of the discussions between Italy and Japan that took place during Expo Osaka 2025. It explores the reasons behind the global success of Japanese graphic art, from ukiyoe prints (images of the "Floating World") to contemporary posters and manga.
The exhibition is divided into four main thematic sections: Nature, Figures, Sign, and Contemporary Japonisme. It features over 200 works, including woodblock prints, books, posters, and handcrafted items. The collection tells a rich story of the evolution of Japanese graphics, showcasing its connection to calligraphy, typography, design, fashion, and even film. The exhibition highlights key artists and themes from different eras, showing how techniques and subjects have changed while maintaining the recognizable visual essence of Japanese culture.
Works are on loan from prestigious public and private institutions in both Italy and Japan, including the Oriental Art Museum "Edoardo Chiossone" in Genoa and the Dai Nippon Foundation.
