Mohábbat (sull’Iran)

On Tuesday 3 November 2026, at 9:00 pm, Teatri di Vita presents Mohábbat (on Iran), choreographed and directed by Afshin Varjavandi.

Mohábbat is a Persian word meaning “affection, care”, which Afshin Varjavandi identifies as the core of the culture he comes from, Persian culture, to the point of representing the spirit of the Iranian people. This is the starting point for the exploration undertaken by the choreographer and dancers, who together become the symbol of a “family”, one of many that have fled their country of origin in search of new hope and a free and vibrant horizon.

In Iran and elsewhere in the world, beliefs, freedom of expression, gender equality, progress and emancipation have been institutionally restricted for decades. What price do people pay when they leave their homeland? What does it feel like to begin a journey with no return? Through an eclectic, hybrid dance combining contemporary movement, movement research and urban dance techniques, the dancers create an imaginary sacred space, a fortress or a refuge where there is no form of oppression or cruelty and into which they warmly invite the audience.

Afshin Varjavandi began studying dance at the age of 14, initially approaching hip hop and urban styles with leading international teachers, before exploring classical, contemporary, modern jazz, body contact and floor contact techniques. Astràgali Teatro was founded in Lecce in 1981 and has developed artistic projects, performances and activities in around 30 countries worldwide, including conflict zones.
