Götterdämmerung - Opera at Comunale Nouveau

The Ring of the Nibelung, Day Three. The time has come for the gods, as the three Norns, the weavers of fate and daughters of Erda, the Earth, well know. However, Alberich's greed and hatred also poison the world of men, driving his son Hagen to plot against Siegfried. A magic potion makes him forget and betray his love: now the hero longs for the hand of Gutrune, Hagen's half-sister and Gunther's sister, to whom he promises to give Brünnhilde as his bride. He will remember her again, but dying, stabbed in the back by Hagen. The hero dies, and the dreamt-of age of heroes comes to an end. The lust for the Ring does not die, killing both Gunther and Hagen. The cursed treasure will be purified by Brünnhilde on Siegfried's funeral pyre. As the flames burn Valhalla, the home of the gods, the gentle waters of the Rhine overflow and find their treasure again. The cycle is complete, and with it Wagner's endeavour to make opera a metaphor for the world through myth.
