Cinema in our heart

Updated on 15 May 2026 From Bologna Welcome

The heart of Bologna once again comes alive with great cinema. From June onwards, the city hosts a season of films, screenings and festivals ready to captivate both locals and visitors.

Here are the most anticipated open-air film festivals and screenings in Bologna:

Sotto le Stelle del Cinema (Under the Stars of Cinema)

From June 15 to August 14, 2026, Piazza Maggiore transforms into the most beautiful open-air cinema in the world: Sotto le Stelle del Cinema. As tradition dictates, the festival will enliven the summer of locals and visitors during Bologna’s long warm evenings. A unique and magical atmosphere to experience together, among great classics and more recent films.

The full programme for the 2026 season will soon be available online on the official Cineteca website.

Il Cinema Ritrovato (The Rediscovered Cinema)

Il Cinema Ritrovato celebrates its fortieth edition and pays tribute to Luchino Visconti, Barbara Stanwyck and Joséphine Baker. From June 20 to 28, it presents masterpieces from film history, from morning until night in cinemas across the city, with the grand finale every evening in Piazza Maggiore.

A journey across time and space: cinema allows us to relive past eras and explore distant countries and peoples. Il Cinema Ritrovato programme includes masterpieces from the early twentieth century, both European and international: from the Japan of Daisuke Ito to the India of Ritwik Kumar Ghatak, from documentaries on the history of costume to the political cinema of Juan Antonio Bardem and many others who narrated the great upheavals of the Short Twentieth Century.

Screenings will also take place at the Modernissimo Cinema and the Lumière Cinema, where, among many proposals, visitors will be able to attend restored silent film concerts accompanied live by pianists and musical ensembles. The programme also includes three evenings of screenings with carbon arc projection in Piazzetta Pasolini, offering audiences the magic of the sublime dialogue between moving images and live music.

A dedicated space for children will feature screenings, performances and workshops: from celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of Collodi’s birth, with the complete screening of The Adventures of Pinocchio by Comencini, to animated cinema.

The festival, once again curated by the Cineteca di Bologna, is a paradise for film lovers: with restored films and international guests, it always delivers great surprises.

Arena Puccini

This year, the Arena Puccini Festival changes venue due to renovation works at the Dopolavoro Ferroviario. The 2026 season will be hosted at the Via dell’Arcoveggio racecourse, with a screen and seating for 1,000 people set up on the track.

The programme begins on Friday, June 12 with the ultimate cult film about the world of horse racing: Febbre da cavallo.

The full programme for the 2026 season will soon be available online on the official Arena Puccini website.
