Bologna
From June 21-29, Bologna hosts the 39th Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, with 454 films over 9 days in 8 city theaters and outdoor evening screenings in Piazza Maggiore and Piazzetta Pasolini. The event, organized by the Cineteca di Bologna, is a cinephile's paradise, with films from morning to night and a book fair dedicated to cinema at the Renzo Renzi Library. The festivities begin as early as June 16 with a review of restorations, which will continue through July 6.
More than 60 screenings of silent films will be brought to life through live music, with piano, ensemble and Municipal Theater Orchestra accompanying masterpieces such as Les Misérables, The Man with a Movie Camera and Méliès classics narrated live.
Luigi Comencini will be the Italian author we are going to investigate in this 39th edition. Cinema Ritrovato will then take us to the rediscovery of an Oscar (and record-breaking) icon, capable of totaling 4 statuettes (never collected) and 12 nominations, such as Katharine Hepburn, and then film masters from all over the world the American Lewis Milestone, the Japanese Mikio Naruse, the Austrian Willi Forst.
The opening night of the 39th Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, Saturday, June 21 in Piazza Maggiore, will feature the spectacular 70mm film print of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a sci-fi masterpiece directed in 1977 by Steven Spielberg.
This year's guests include: Terry Gilliam, Jim Jarmusch, Coline Serreau, Bob Wilson, Peter Suschitzky, Thierry Frémaux, Nicolas Seydoux, Alice Rohrwacher, Francesca Comencini, Joshua Oppenheimer, John Simenon, Altan, Brady Corbet, and Oscar winners Jonathan Glazer, Asghar Farhad.
