Cycling Track around the Chalk Formation of Gaibola

Updated on 05 March 2020 From Comune di Bologna

The tour takes place in the lower hills between San Lazzaro di Savena and Ozzano. It is a relatively short route but the climbs are not to be underestimated.

After starting in an urban environment (the centre of San Lazzaro), you reach the entrance to the Parco dei Gessi ("Park of Chalks"), which is characterized by an uncommon rock, Chalk, and its related karst environments featuring sinkholes (large funnel-shaped basins with the classic sinkhole cave at the bottom), groves, former cropland and small rocks; the river environment is also distinguished by the presence of poplars, willows and Black alder, with undergrowth mainly of Cornelian cherry, Elder, Field maple and Common dogwood.

After the final stop at the Farneto Grotto, of historical and archaeological value and nowadays also of didactic and tourist interest, you will reach the locality La Cicogna, from where you can take the cycling track towards San Lazzaro station or continue to via Palazzetti and reach the station of Ozzano.
