During the 19th century, the villa belonged to the Simoni family of Medicina. A large and wealthy family, Tommaso Simoni and Marianna Modoni gave birth to Ignazio Simoni in 1826, who served as captain in the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860, after which he joined the regular army and reached the rank of major. He died in Novara on 7th April 1862 after falling from his horse. His red shirt and other memorabilia are kept at the Civic Museum of the Risorgimento in Bologna.
The villa is now the seat of the Medardo Mascagni Music Association.
