In Montovolo, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione is the first Sanctuary of the Archdiocese of Bologna and dates back to the 12th century. The primitive Church was built on a pre-existing pagan temple of 900 AD, dedicated to the rural goddess Pale, adored by the Etruscans. The Sanctuary preserves the polychrome statue of the Madonna of Montovolo (15th-16th centuries) and an ancient crypt, very important evidence of the original Church.
