Bologna
The Paraporto Scaletta, better known as the "Ice House", is placed at the beginning of a section of the suspended canal regulated by two other spillways (called Verrocchio and San Luca). The structures, renovated in 2009, are visible from via Scaletta and at the end of via Canale, or from above following the Bologna-Casalecchio cycling track. The system, which is still operating, prevents debris transported by water to be deposited, since it performs a cleaning function. Formerly, during winter, the ice sheets that formed at the surface were spilled from the installation over to the Reno river, thus preventing the wheels of the city windmills to break down; hence the name Ice House.
