The Park spans over a 6,300 hectares area, comprising territories of the municipalities of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana Morandi. The vast zone saw the brutal elimination of hundreds of defenseless civilians by nazi and fascist troops in 1944. It is a protected area since 1989; its primary objective, along with the conservation and valorization of the environmental heritage, is to promote a culture of peace aimed to future generations.
It is home to the Memorial Route, which touches the “Il Poggiolo” visits center, crosses the symbol locations of the massacre and the Monte Sole mountaintop, which ultimately houses the memorial stone for the Partisans who offered the extreme sacrifice in these valleys during the Liberation War.
The Monte Sole Park also stands out for the 936 floral species reported in the area (one third of the floral biodiversity in the Emilia-Romagna region) and for a rich, diversified wild fauna, a testament to the integrity and strength of the ecosystem.
