Earphone usage policy:

Inside the Archiginnasio Palace, the use of earphones is mandatory for secondary school groups and universities, while for primary and middle schools, earphones are optional.

Teachers accompanying secondary school students are considered on an equal footing with tour guides and therefore may not provide explanations without the use of earphones. If teachers are not interested in providing explanations and wish to be exempted from the obligation to use earphones, they may fill out a special declaration, which must be kept for the entire duration of the visit and is available at the ticket office when tickets are collected. Therefore, explanations cannot be given without the use of earphones.

If groups are not already equipped with earphones, they can purchase them at the same time as their tickets or request them within 24 hours of the visit by writing to booking@bolognawelcome.it. The rental cost is €2.00 per earphone. Up to two teachers or accompanying persons per group are eligible for free earphones.

The Palace and its Halls

The Archiginnasio Palace was built between 1562 and 1563 at the behest of the Papal Legate of Bologna, Cardinal Charles Borromeo, and the Vice-Legate Pier Donato Cesi, based on a design by Bolognese architect Antonio Morandi, known as Terribilia. This operation, which came about in the cultural climate of the Council of Trent, was meant to give university teaching a single home, since it had been spread out over different places until that time.

Visit to the building:

The exterior of the building features a long 30-arch portico and is divided into two floors around a central courtyard with a double row of loggias. Two large staircases lead to the upper floor where you can visit the two historic rooms: the Anatomical Theatre and the Stabat Mater Hall (not open to visitors during public events). The Library section is not accessible to tourists or school groups.
