Giacomo Puccini Madama Butterfly Based on a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, Madama Butterfly is an opera in three acts that depicts the anxieties of the female soul. The protagonist of the drama Cio-Cio-san, despite being a victim of the marriage institution, grows in awareness throughout the opera up until the mature stage of motherhood, in the name of which she makes decisive choices. That of the protagonist is therefore a fragile and tormented figure, who finds in the most hidden regions of her soul the strength to break with conventions and to find freedom in abandoningher child and life.
