Elinor Frey and Patxi Montero suggest exchanges and hybrids of repertoire between cello and viola da gamba, two analog instruments that at the end of the Seventeenth Century competed for the primacy in the courts of France, England and Germany.
The cello, an amazing invention by Emilian and Neapolitan instrumentalists, competed with the aristocratic viola da gamba and her characteristic vague sound. Thus, in the present programme, Bach's Cello Suite no.2 is performed by Patxi Montero on the viola da gamba, while Elinor Frey transposes Violin Partita no.2 on to the five-string cello.
