Adventure in the chestnut groves of Castel Del Rio – Foliage Tour Kids

From the Church of Sant’Andrea (394 m), in the municipality of Castel del Rio (BO), we will begin the walk by climbing through the hamlet of Poggio Sant’Andrea until we reach the ridge path. From here, sweeping panoramic views open up over the villages of Ladrino and Orio below.

We’ll continue along the forest track, which will gradually take us higher, as we enter the chestnut groves. The climb through woods and landscapes typical of chestnut cultivation will lead us to a picturesque natural viewpoint overlooking the village of Castiglioncello.

After a brief change of direction, we will begin the descent, passing through the chestnut groves of Pian di Zanella and Cà dei Fanti, areas historically linked to the cultivation of the ‘marrone di Castel del Rio’ chestnut. The return journey will follow the road and the CAI path back to the Church of Sant’Andrea. On the final stretch along the tarmac road, you’ll be able to admire the wooden sculptures created by a local sculptor, before completing the circular walk.

This experience is designed for children, offering a simple and direct way to connect with nature, the chestnut groves and the local traditions.

THEMATIC ACTIVITY/KIDS’ WORKSHOP OR GAMES ALONG THE ROUTE

During the walk, there will be a dedicated activity focusing on woodland animals, to help participants learn to recognise wildlife through the clues it leaves behind.

An experience of exploration and observation to discover remains, footprints and tracks, whilst learning to interpret the signs of animals’ presence in their natural environment.

The trail will be enhanced by individual and team games focusing on wildlife, offering a fun way to explore the relationships between prey and predators and get to know the forest’s inhabitants better.

On the guide’s advice, the recommended minimum age for this experience is 5 or 6 years. For younger children, you can use a child carrier rucksack or, if necessary, a hiking pushchair, bearing in mind, however, that on some sections you will need to push it uphill.

Before booking, please bear in mind that:

• Pets are allowed, but must be kept on a lead and are the owner’s responsibility
• You can reach the destination by taking the regional train from Bologna Centrale to Imola, then bus 104 to Castel del Rio and bus 145 to Ponte Galloni. From there, it is about a 22-minute walk to the meeting point
• We recommend bringing a small rucksack for children with water and a few snacks
