Description
The Ottocento Museum in Bologna is situated at Piazza San Michele 4/C, opposite Corte Isolani, on Strada Maggiore – the thoroughfare linking the International Museum and Library of Music, the Davia Bargellini Museum, Casa Morandi and the Civic Museum of the Risorgimento. The museum comprises 12 exhibition sections with a permanent collection of 100 works organised into thematic groups, including oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and sketches, documenting the main stylistic movements of the ‘long century’ as seen through the eyes of artists from the Bologna area.
The museum is also a research centre and organises temporary exhibitions and events.
The Museo Ottocento Bologna is sponsored by the Municipality of Bologna and forms part of a nationwide project aimed at fostering dialogue with leading Italian institutions, such as the Giovanni Boldini Museum and the Museo dell’Ottocento in Ferrara, the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum in Livorno, the Revoltella Museum in Trieste, the GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan, the Divisionismo Pinacoteca Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Tortona, and the Museo dell’Ottocento Fondazione Di Persio-Pallotta in Pescara.
The exhibition programme at the Museo Ottocento Bologna begins around the middle of the century, exploring the region’s artistic developments through works by Bolognese artists such as Giovanni Paolo Bedini, Luigi Busi, Fabio Fabbi, Mario De Maria, Alfredo Protti and many others, delving into the pivotal period between the late 18th century in Bologna and the 20th century of Giorgio Morandi, featuring works of international excellence.
From Neo-Pompeian painting to Naturalism, from Orientalism to Symbolism, featuring works exhibited at the Venice Biennale, a selection dedicated to Gabriele d’Annunzio and connections with Decadentism.
The final section covers early 20th-century Secessionism and the emergence of the ‘Maestro di via Fondazza’.
