Description
The 19th-century Bologna Museum (Museo Ottocento) is located in Piazza San Michele 4/C, in front of Corte Isolani, on Strada Maggiore, an axis that connects the International Museum and Library of Music, the Davia Bargellini Museum, Casa Morandi and the Museo Civico del Risorgimento. The Museum consists of 12 exhibition sections with a permanent collection of 85 works divided into themed nuclei, including oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and sketches, documenting the main stylistic trends of the "long century" as interpreted by Bolognese artists.
The Museum also serves as a research centre with temporary exhibitions and events.
Museo Ottocento Bologna is endorsed by the Municipality of Bologna as part of a nationwide project aimed at creating partnerships with major Italian institutions, such as the Museo Giovanni Boldini and the Museo dell'Ottocento in Ferrara, the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori in Livorno, the Museo Revoltella in Trieste, the GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan, the Divisionism Pinacoteca Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Tortona, and the Museo dell'Ottocento Fondazione Di Persio-Pallotta in Pescara.
The exhibition tour of the Museo Ottocento Bologna starts around the middle of the century, plumbing the artistic developments of the area through works by Bolognese artists such as Giovanni Paolo Bedini, Luigi Busi, Fabio Fabbi, Mario De Maria, Alfredo Protti and many others, delving into the nodal period between the end of the 18th century in Bologna and Giorgio Morandi's 20th century composed of international luminaries.
The collection ranges from Neo-Pompeian painting to Naturalism, over Orientalism and Symbolism, with works exhibited at the Venice Biennials, and selection dedicated to Gabriele d'Annunzio and Decadentism.
The last section is devoted to early 20th century Secessionism and the emergence of Giorgio Morandi.
