Saturday May 9, 2026 at 8:30 PM, the Ex Chiesa di San Mattia in Bologna hosts the concert Vasto Mar.
Vasto Mar is a sonic journey in which the element of water— in its natural, symbolic, and spiritual dimension—becomes a meeting point between two seemingly distant worlds: Baroque music and contemporary creation.
The FontanaMIX ensemble, a voice of present-day musical research, and the Ensemble Sezione Aurea, a group specializing in historical performance practice, weave their sounds together to create an original program in which works by Heinrich Schütz, Claudio Monteverdi, and George Philipp Telemann coexist with visionary compositions by Tomas Adès, Salvatore Sciarrino, Tan Dun, and Toshio Hosokawa. These are interwoven, through a network of connections, with other 20th-century chamber works, from Claude Debussy to Maurice Ravel.
For Baroque composers, the sea was a mirror of the divine, of the movement of the affections and of natural forces; for modern and contemporary composers, it is living matter, a primordial sound, an ecological reflection. Vasto Mar is the listening experience of this dialogue: a wave that travels across centuries and restores water as an inexhaustible source of musical imagination.
