Seventy minutes of darkness for 10 musicians in concert, led by a radically modified grand piano in tuning. Games and variations, culminating in a four-minute chord, flourish on the surface of slow-moving sound blocks. The author of the singular perceptual experiment is Georg Friedrich Haas (born in 1953), an Austrian composer renowned for his sound exploits and risky experimentalisms, now a professor at Columbia University in New York. For Haas, listening "is a practice similar to meditation" in which any other disturbing element must be removed.
