Sunday April 19, 2026, as part of “Variazioni”, a musical guided tour at the Museo della Musica di Bologna with Edmondo Romano, wind instruments, and Matteo Rabolini, percussion.
At the roots of sound is a musical visit inviting the audience to explore the extraordinary collection of non-European instruments of the Museo della Musica, crossing cultures, continents, and centuries of sound traditions. Not just a simple exhibition route, but a true itinerant lecture-concert: a journey through distant acoustic landscapes, ancient materials, and craftsmanship that have shaped music around the world.
Guided by two specialists such as Edmondo Romano and Matteo Rabolini and their remarkable collections, visitors will discover how instruments are created, what symbols they hold, and which techniques define their sound. Each stop along the route presents traditional melodies—Mediterranean, Eastern, African, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European—interwoven with original compositions that show how different roots can naturally dialogue and blend together.
During the musical visit, it will be possible to closely observe over 70 instruments often known only through soundtracks or specialized recordings: strings and percussion with hypnotic timbres, ancestral flutes, ritual or dance instruments, each accompanied by stories about tonalities, ornamentation, and musical practices of their respective cultures. The audience will also be able to ask questions, request further insights, compare sounds and playing techniques, and be surprised by a rich and still little-known sonic heritage: an immersive and accessible experience that allows one to discover the world through what has always united humanity—the sound.
