The tradition of the 'Vecchione' in Piazza Maggiore turns one hundred years old: it was in fact 31 December 1922 when the ritual of burning - at the time a large puppet made of straw and rags stuffed with firecrackers and set on fire to symbolise the farewell to the year just gone and welcome the new one - was first celebrated.
An important anniversary is celebrated in Piazza Lucio Dalla with the exhibition 'Vecchi Vecchioni 100'.
The exhibition, which can be freely viewed from outside at any time, includes the precious vecchioni prototypes created over the years by various artists.
The speciality of the artist's vecchioni - a tradition that began in the 1990s - lies in their becoming bearers of different messages each year, generating reflections on the human condition or messages of close relevance, from racism to environmental issues, from the economic crisis to the risks of individualism and the fears of our times.
