Bologna
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the Study Center of Far-Eastern Art in Bologna, the Museum of Palazzo Poggi presents an important exhibition dedicated to Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Very popular in his time he has long been unjustly underestimated in the West. Recently Kunisada has been the subject of numerous researches, publications and worldwide exhibitions, which revealed his extraordinary artistic stature raising him at the same level of the nineteenth century greatest artists of ukiyo-e xilography, such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. Kunisada has produced more than 40,000 works including prints, books and paintings. His vast production of prints dedicated to kabuki theatre makes him the greatest author of theatrical prints of the nineteenth century. He has also left numerous masterpieces of representations of female beauties, a genre called bijinga in Japanese. The collection of Japanise ukiyo-e prints of the Museum of Palazzo Poggi is rich of more than 250 works of Kunisada, owned by Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna and of the Study Center of Far-Eastern Art. About 90 of the most representative were selected for the realization of the exhibition. The prints are presented in three separate exhibitions, following a chronological path, thus allowing to know through significant works the main stylistic phases of the long and fruitful artistic career of Kunisada.
