Miss America is the first major exhibition in Italy by Portuguese artist Francisco Tropa (Lisbon, 1968) since Scenario, the Portuguese pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale. The exhibition takes its title from the main work, Miss America, a previously unreleased creation that combines installation and performance. The piece, which marks the start of a new cycle of work for Tropa, will occupy almost the entire Hall and will be cyclically assembled and disassembled in the presence of the public throughout the first week of the exhibition, before being displayed in a static form.
Accompanying Miss America, the exhibition includes Lantern with clock mechanism, 2025, a device/sculpture that projects moving lights and shadows, part of the cycle of works exhibited in Venice in 2011.
Francisco Tropa is one of the most prominent Portuguese artists to have gained international recognition over the last thirty years. His work encompasses installations, sculptures, drawings, performances, photography, and film, ranging from the rarefaction of conceptual language to the allure of traditional materials such as bronze, wood, and glass.
