On Thursday, May 28, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art of Bologna opens the exhibition Giuseppe Chiari 1926–2026 - Partitura per un museo (Score for a Museum).
The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Balbi and Mario Chiari, conceived on the occasion of the centenary of the artist’s birth (Florence, September 26, 1926 – Florence, May 9, 2007), with the aim of offering a comprehensive critical interpretation of Chiari’s work, recognized as one of the most significant in the Italian art scene of the second half of the 20th century.
The exhibition represents the first complete retrospective of Giuseppe Chiari’s work in a public institution and stands out for its structure, which proposes a multifaceted and transversal investigation, moving beyond the logic of presenting homogeneous thematic sections. In this perspective, Chiari’s figure is historically contextualized starting from the 1960s and 1970s, with openings to later developments, and reinterpreted in light of his relationships with Fluxus in Italy and with other contemporary experiences.
His position within these contexts, however, is defined by a substantial autonomy: an intermittent participation that cannot be fully assimilated, resulting in a critical engagement with artistic movements without ever coinciding with a programmatic adherence.
The exhibition will be open from May 29 to September 27, 2026.
