Bourouissa explores the relationship between the individual and society, highlighting the various social roles people inhabit and the connections between personal experience and collective contexts. His work addresses themes such as migration, labor, and urban life, using a range of media — from photography and drawing to video, sculpture, and music — in a practice defined by hybridization and layering.
Works on display:
-
Périphérique (2005–2008): A series of staged photographs inspired by classical painting, depicting scenes of tension in the French suburbs. Using non-professional actors, the works give visibility to individuals often excluded from mainstream narratives.
-
Horse Day (2013–2019): A project centered on African American urban stables in Philadelphia that challenges the myth of the white cowboy. It includes photographs, videos, and sculptures made by printing images on car body parts, creating a dialogue between horses and automobiles — both symbols of identity and transformation.
-
Shoplifters (2014): A reinterpretation of surveillance-style photographs displayed at a Brooklyn supermarket, showing alleged shoplifters alongside stolen items. Bourouissa reclaims these images, turning them into a critique of poverty and consumer society.
-
Hands (2025): A new and previously unseen series that reuses details from earlier works, printed on plexiglass and layered over metal grids. The hands and gestures portrayed become symbols of resistance and control, evoking tension and critical reflection.
Through a diverse mix of media and materials, the exhibition not only chronicles Bourouissa’s artistic journey but also examines how photography is transforming in a time of profound social change.
The exhibition will be accompanied by free events (reservation required), guided tours, and educational workshops for children and young people. More information is available on the website.
