Saturday, December 6th, at 9:00 PM, at the Alice Zeppilli Theatre, I Sacchi di Sabbia present the show: Troilo e Cressida - L’Iliade raccontata da Shakespeare: The Trojan War has stagnated after seven years; the fighting has grown increasingly sluggish. Hector is bored and decides to issue a chivalrous challenge: to any Greek brave enough to face him in a “sporting” duel, he will prove that his woman is far more faithful than all the women of Greece.
During this truce, the love between Troilus, the youngest son of Priam, and Cressida, the daughter of the prophet Calchas, blooms and withers. Meanwhile, Ulysses and Nestor take advantage of the pause to provoke Achilles, wounding his pride and forcing him back into battle.
Everything revolves around this idea of truce—a word as relevant as ever—which I Sacchi di Sabbia reinterpret in a sporting key: the actions, tone, and accents of the characters consistently reference competitive sports. The characters are identified by the names on the performers’ uniforms, just like in soccer, basketball, or American football.
As for the rest, everything follows Shakespeare’s vision: not a tale of war, but a tragicomic parody of peace.
