From 11 to 21 December 2025, the Teatro delle Moline will stage Giocasta, written and performed by Michela Lucenti.
Jocasta, Oedipus’s mother-lover, is the protagonist of a dance–theatre piece that challenges patriarchal society and reflects on the contradictions of our contemporary age.
A few objects, a distorted present, the voice as a musical instrument, a trembling and fragmented body—these are the elements of choreographer and performer Michela Lucenti’s new artistic exploration of one of the most contradictory female figures of classical tragedy: Jocasta, the mother of Oedipus.
Drawing on an anthropological study of the myth, the piece is inspired by Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice and the latest version of Euripides’ The Phoenician Women, to narrate a woman’s perspective on the horrors of war, touching on themes of power and ambition. The story of the incestuous love between Jocasta and Oedipus—portrayed here by young singer-songwriter and performer Thybaud Monterisi—expresses a challenge to the conventions of patriarchal society.
Music, choreography, and dramaturgy are conceived as “instruments capable of conveying, with physical and sensorial force, the eternal drama of a mother and a city,” writes the choreographer, “reflecting the timeless tensions of our contemporary world.”
