Ariadne auf Naxos recounts the theatre in the theatre, in a symbiosis of mythological drama and art comedy: in the house of a rich Viennese gentleman is planned the staging of the opera seria Ariadne auf Naxos, commissioned to a young and talented composer, followed by an Italian farce. However, time is not enough for both performances, so the host orders that the serious work and the farce are represented together.
