From June 12 to 15, 2025, in Bubano, a hamlet of the municipality of Mordano in the province of Bologna, the annual event of the Palio del Torrione returns.
The Palio del Torrione of Bubano, first held in 1997, is a historical reenactment that takes place every year during the third week of June.
The reenactment is inspired by two elements of the town’s history: the legend of a dragon in the area (possibly a serpent, or a symbol of a plague outbreak) around the year 1200, and the presence of Caterina Sforza in the 15th century.
Each of the town’s four districts must appoint one lady and four knights to compete for the Palio. The ladies, chosen by lot from each district, ascend the castle towers; armed with a lance, they must strike the dragon placed at the center of the castle. The knights, positioned at the base, must push their lady’s tower as close as possible to the target while hindering the advance of rival districts. The competition consists of two rounds, with a tiebreaker if needed. The district with the highest score and most rounds won is declared the winner of the Palio.
The event will also feature a historical parade and games for both children and adults. Several food stands will be available throughout the festivities.
