Student-friendly Bologna
Updated on 07 March 2024 From Bologna Welcome
Bologna is called la Dotta (The Learned) because it was here that the first university in the western world was established. Even to this day, the city is a favourite university destination for national and international off-site students. Here, young people can find a warm refuge, hospitality, education, and a lot of fun and entertainment, whilst feeling at home far away from their respective homelands.
The first days of spring are likely to see the city begin to empty out: don't worry, not everyone is back home. A great tradition of local students is to gather at the Margherita Gardens on the first fine days to soak up the sun and play frisbee or ball with friends!
Coping with the cold Bolognese winter often requires seeking refuge at the after-work railway club (DLF) with a drink or a warm meal within comfortable indoor spaces or outdoor tables covered by umbrellas. In addition, the DLF comes with beach volleyball, tennis and football pitches for a small fee: why not throw in a game and explore the after-work railway club with friends?

No real weekend in Bologna is complete without attending a typical DJ set in Piazza Scaravilli: as soon as you step foot in Piazza Verdi, you will start to hear the music getting closer. Alongside DJ sets, you will often find live events where music-minded students are given the opportunity to perform. These shows, jointly organised by the self-managed collective ‘Movimento Arti Libere’, usually start around 11pm and vary in musical genre from week to week.
This nightclub on Via Sebastiano Serlio is located within the DLF complex and offers a wide range of events, from live performances by artists of many different genres to almost weekly stand-up comedy sessions.
If you're into vintage fairs, you can't miss the market at the Montagnola. Every Friday and Saturday, Piazza VIII Agosto and the grounds of the Montagnola Park are filled with stalls selling clothes, brooches, film posters and much more. Alternatively, check out the Rail Market held every second Sunday of the month at the Dumbo premises.

As a university city, Bologna is home to many Erasmus students. Many dedicated evenings are regularly arranged at the Alibi Club, in Via Alfredo Calzoni, within easy transport reach, or at Soda Pops in the university area open every day, except Tuesdays, from 10pm to 3am. Soda Pops is one of the most appreciated venues by Erasmus students and therefore hosts a weekly programme of music and entertainment. A similarly popular venue is the Cluricaune Irish Pub on Via Zamboni, serving excellent beers under a host of TV screens for sporting events.
Students will find a variety of cafés and clubs granting special concessions, such as the ‘Piccolo & Sublime’ bar where, on presentation of your university ID card, you can get a Spritz for just €3!
Also consider dropping by the Scuderie in Piazza Verdi: a place to study or hang out with friends in peace and quiet with a well-stocked cafeteria and a host of night shows. The Scuderie is the ideal spot to have a cheap lunch with your university partners thanks to discounted menus for Unibo and Er.go students.
Not forgetting Soda Pops and the ‘College Polleg’ student night on Tuesdays, offering special discounts on drinks on presentation of your Unibo student card.
And here's the icing on the cake: the Guasto's half-hidden garden. Located a stone's throw from Piazza Verdi, at Via del Guasto 1, this is the perfect spot for a lunch break between classes in springtime. The interior offers a number of free tables to sit at and spend time with your friends chatting or for intense study sessions in a relaxing environment far from the city's hustle and bustle.
