Burzanella is one of the 12 hamlets in the municipality of Camugnano about 5 km from the main town. Burzanella's history dates back to the year 1000 with the origin of its clearly Roman name (Bricianella-Brucianella) derived from the Latin word Briccius or Brittius. A 'Charta offersionis' states that the lords Barucianus et Raineri et Wido germani of Lombard origin, offered goods to the abbey of Montepiano with the exception of a house in 'Castro Bricianella'. This document therefore testifies to the existence of a castrum (castle or fortress). It is also worth recalling an appeal by the inhabitants of Burzanella, sent to the government of Bologna, pleading for an alleviation of taxes because of their inability to effectively settle them, due both to the the rather barren and infertile territory they lived in and the frequent raids and plundering by factions fighting with the municipality of Bologna. The church of S. Donnino can be found in a list of churches from 1378, dependent on the Pieve di S. Giovanni Battista di Verzuno. In the second half of the 19th century, the building underwent a general renovation resulting in the loss of all memory of the Romanesque period, which was still noticeable in Calindri's accounts at the end of the 18th century. Finally, near Burzanella, it is worth noting the small Oratorio dei Frascari, with its gabled roof, bell gable and late 16th-century portal with open tympanum, dedicated to the Madonna dei Sette Dolori. A beautiful painted stucco statue of the seated Madonna with clasped hands and seven swords thrust into her heart is preserved inside.
